Newborn babies cannot speak, but they have their own special “language” to tell us exactly what they need. If you have ever felt confused or stressed when your baby cries, you are not alone.
Dunstan Baby Language is a simple and practical system that helps parents understand the five universal cry sounds that almost every newborn makes in the first 0–3 months of life. Once you learn these sounds, you can respond faster, calm your baby quicker, and feel more confident as a new parent.
Created by Australian researcher Priscilla Dunstan (a mother and musician), this method is based on the observation that babies make specific reflex sounds before they start full crying. These sounds are the same across cultures and languages. Many parents worldwide have found it extremely helpful in reducing guesswork during those early exhausting weeks.
The 5 Main Newborn Cry Sounds (Dunstan Baby Language)
Here are the five basic sounds, explained in very easy words along with what they mean and what you should do:
1- “Neh” – I’m Hungry!
Sounds like “Neh-Neh-Neh-Neh” (tongue pushing against the roof of the mouth). Body language: Baby may turn head towards your chest, suck on hands or fists. What to do: Feed your baby right away. This is usually the first and most common cry.
2- “Owh” – I’m Sleepy!
Sounds like a big yawn – “Owh” or “Oah”. Body language: Rubbing eyes, yawning, becoming fussy. What to do: Swaddle your baby gently and place them in a safe sleep space (bassinet or crib) following safe sleep guidelines.
3- Heh” – I’m Uncomfortable!
Short, repetitive “Heh-Heh” sound. Body language: Wriggling, arching back, looking restless. What to do: Check diaper, temperature (too hot or too cold), clothing, or position. A simple cuddle or change of scenery often helps.
4- “Eh” – I Need to Burp!
Short, jerky “Eh-Eh-Eh” sound (usually right after or during feeding). Body language: Squirming, pulling away from the breast/bottle. What to do: Pause feeding and burp your baby properly over your shoulder or in an upright position.
5- “Eairh” (or Eargghh) –
I Have Gas or Tummy Pain! Strained, longer “Eairh” or “Eh-airh” sound. Body language: Pulling legs up towards tummy, turning red, passing gas. What to do: Gently bicycle the legs, give tummy massage in clockwise direction, or hold baby upright for 10–15 minutes after feeding.
How to Use Dunstan Baby Language Effectively
- Start listening in the first 5–10 seconds of crying (before it becomes loud full crying).
- Practice in a quiet room when your baby is calm.
- Combine the sound with body language for better accuracy.
- Be patient — it usually takes 1–2 weeks to become confident.
Benefits of Understanding Your Baby’s Cries
- Faster response = less crying and happier baby
- Less stress and anxiety for parents
- Stronger bonding and trust between you and your baby
- Helps prevent excessive crying and colic-like situations
Important Safety Note
Dunstan Baby Language is a helpful tool, but it is not a medical diagnosis. If your newborn cries continuously for more than 3 hours a day, has fever, vomiting, unusual lethargy, or you are worried, immediately consult your paediatrician.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), responding promptly and sensitively to your baby’s cries in the early months helps build a secure attachment. Read AAP’s official advice on Responding to Your Baby’s Cries
Quick Tips for New Parents
- Keep a small notebook or notes app for the first two weeks to note which sound you heard and what worked.
- Share this knowledge with your partner, grandparents, or nanny.
- Remember: Every baby is unique. Some babies mix sounds or develop their own variations.
