Normal Bilirubin Levels by Age (Parent-Friendly Guide)

These simplified reference ranges help parents understand typical bilirubin levels during the newborn period. Clinical care, however, must always follow the official AAP 2022 Bilirubin Nomogram .

Baby Age Typical Range (mg/dL) Interpretation
0–24 hours 0 – 6 mg/dL Levels above 8 mg/dL in the first 24 hours require immediate evaluation.
24–48 hours 4 – 10 mg/dL Levels above 12 mg/dL may require closer monitoring or repeat testing.
48–72 hours 6 – 12 mg/dL Levels above 15 mg/dL may enter a high-risk range.
72–96 hours 6 – 14 mg/dL Levels above 17 mg/dL often need prompt pediatric evaluation.
4–14 days 6 – 15 mg/dL Levels above 20 mg/dL may require urgent medical attention.
⚠️ Important: Jaundice appearing within the first 24 hours or rapidly rising bilirubin levels may indicate hemolysis, infection, or other medical conditions requiring urgent evaluation.

Latest AAP Update (As of 2025)

This jaundice assessment follows the AAP 2022 Clinical Practice Guideline for Hyperbilirubinemia, which remains the most current and official guideline as of December 2025. No updates, revisions, or corrections have been released after 2022. The 2022 guideline is still the active standard of care for infants ≥35 weeks gestation.
